Can AI be Combined with Copywriting?
AI, artificial intelligence, is booming. It can help you with all sorts of things. From simple tasks, such as naming a number of holiday destinations, solving a difficult calculation or finding a recipe for the best lasagna, to complex tasks, such as coming up with a new software, putting together an app and developing a more efficient system for your accounting.
Many think that AI has taken over the work of a copywriter. On the contrary. There are even new jobs that have to do with AI and copywriting these days, such as prompt engineers. But that AI has taken over copywriting is far from the truth. And I’m going to explain to you why in this article.
What AI Can’t Do
AI, as we know it today, does not (yet) have feelings. And I’m talking more about the larger models, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini (formerly Bard). These are the most commonly used AI models that humans are using at the time of writing. But despite so many people using AI, it has some major limitations when it comes to copywriting, such as:
Originality
In short: AI has no originality. Yes, it can give you ideas. So you can definitely use it as a source of inspiration when you need it. But they won’t be really original ideas. AI’s answers are based on existing data, examples, and information you provide at the time.
So AI will never be able to come up with something new for you, while new, creative and innovative ideas are just so important to make your copy resonate with your target audience. You don’t want to be the umpteenth with the same story, the umpteenth one using the same text or idea, the umpteenth trying to sell something in the same way. Originality is just super important.
Emotions
Emotion is important in copywriting. You appeal to human emotions, you use those feelings in your text and you try to make a connection with them. AI can’t do that. They can incorporate words with emotion into the text they can create for you, but really sensing what someone is feeling, because of a problem they are experiencing, is still quite a challenge.
In addition, AI cannot draw on its own experiences while writing copy. And this while your own experiences can be a goldmine while writing. For example, you know how you felt then, and therefore also know how your reader feels now. You can tell this in your copy to create a connection, which leads to the reader’s belief that you know what they are going through. This also gives the reader extra confidence that you are not going to fool them.
Culture
Just as everyone is unique, so is every culture. Every culture has its own customs, its own humour, its own things that they find important. AI can recognize this, but it can’t fully understand it to apply it correctly. What one culture finds funny, another may find it offensive.
It’s the same with local, regional and international differences. What is considered normal here, the people from a country on the other side of the world may find weird.
That’s why it’s important to make your own analysis, with or without the help of AI, of your target audience that you want to address.
Ethics
We humans have, in general, an understanding of what is right and wrong. AI can’t see this moral issue, even though it’s so important in your copy. Copywriters and marketers who act morally right don’t want to deceive anyone. They want to do it in a fair way.
AI doesn’t see that. What is good? What is Error? What is allowed? What is not allowed? So there is a good chance that the text created by AI is ethically irresponsible, and therefore perhaps misleading.
Legal
So, while AI can give you a whole text, AI can’t assure you that it complies with local, as well as international, rules. Think about copyright and copyrights. You can’t violate it.
As mentioned earlier, AI cannot provide original texts. All the answers are based on existing data, examples and information that you provide at that moment. You won’t want to use an idea or maybe even an entire text that was invented by someone else. Because it is even possible that you can get a lawsuit filed against you as a result.
What AI Can Help With
AI may not be able to do certain things, but it can certainly be a big help. The aforementioned AI models are both good at different things, but often not at the same thing.
ChatGPT
For inspiration, ChatGPT is your go-to AI model. It can give you different ideas that you hadn’t thought of on your own. Think of ideas for topics to create content about, ideas for your latest sales funnel and even texts that you can draw inspiration from for your own copy.
Suppose you have to write an email for your newsletter, but you don’t know what kind of value to display to the readers, you can give ChatGPT a subject and ask it to write an email about it for your newsletter. Think about the extra information you need to provide, for example the age range of your readers, the tone in which you address the readers and the structure of your email. This will ensure a better result than if you don’t provide that information.
Gemini
As mentioned earlier, Gemini is Google’s AI model. This gives Gemini access to all matters that can be found publicly on the internet. Gemini is better at doing research than ChatGPT, by accessing the available information that can be found online.
Gemini also clearly provides the sources, so you can also see whether the information given is correct. However, it is important to check, because the link to the source does not always work.
So you can use Gemini to do different elements of your research. This includes your target group analysis, competitor analysis, current trends, and much more. Think about what you need help with in order to speed up your research.
Tips
Here are a few more tips so that you will get the best results every time when using an AI model:
- Ask what the model needs from you in terms of information. It will probably ask you some contextual questions to answer so that AI can provide you with the best answer for you.
- Be specific and clear in what you ask of the AI model. Do you want his answer to be short or long? What tone should he use? If it’s a longer text, what are the headings of the paragraphs?
- Provide context. This is important in order to be able to give an answer with depth. Think of the goal, examples, and background information as context you can give.
Recap
AI isn’t your best tool to use for your copywriting, but it can be immensely useful for other things, such as providing inspiration and helping you with elements of research.
